There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa. But travellers to parts of Kenya are considered at risk of yellow fever.South African authorities require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) documenting vaccination against yellow fever from travellers arriving from such countries.
The HPA has said that for some travellers a letter of medical exemption is appropriate.
The HPA advised that health professionals should be aware of the certificate requirement for South Africa.
Health professionals should also be prepared to discuss the risks of vaccination and appropriate options for travellers, the HPA said.
Advice and information about health risks associated with travel to South Africa are available at the National Travel Health Network and Centre website (www.nathnac.org).
The advice follows a warning from the HPA about a recent outbreak of Rift Valley Fever in the country, which has claimed 13 lives since April.
