The 'Post Registration Career Framework for Nurses in Wales', developed by the Welsh Assembly government, aims to support modernising of services to improve patient care.

The document outlines what support should be available from the NHS to enable nurses to gain further experience to achieve their goals whether this might be to expand their knowledge and skills within a role or to go up the career ladder.

Key features of the framework are the need for career advice and regular reviews at key stages and the achievement of specific levels of knowledge and competencies in specialist and advance-level roles.

Health minister Edwina Hart said: ‘This sets out for the first time clear guidance for nurses in planning their future careers and for their managers to structure and provide opportunities for a highly skilled workforce.'
