Vaccine advice to prevent flu errors

GPs have been handed advice on steps to take to avoid errors when administering seasonal flu vaccines for children.

GPs should take steps including checking patient records and taking a full history of previous vaccinations and current medication, according to advice from the Medical Defence Union (MDU). The advice has been issued after a handful of vaccination errors, some of which involved children.

MDU medico-legal adviser Dr Jacqui Phillips said: 'Vaccine errors represent a sizeable proportion of the medication incidents notified to the MDU.

'Not all seasonal flu vaccines are suitable for children and GPs need to ensure that neither they nor practice staff administer the incorrect ones.'
