US business expert tells how NHS reforms must focus on healthcare value

Leading US business strategist Professor Michael Porter has spelt out the concept of healthcare value underpinning the NHS reforms.

Professor Porter spoke for more than an hour at a London conference this week attended by health secretary Andrew Lansley.

He said the UK was now ahead of the rest of the world in beginning to focus on health outcomes, marking a fundamental shift in the focus of healthcare provision.

Watch the video to hear how Professor Porter, of Harvard Business School, believes the NHS can reduce costs while improving services, through a new model of integrated care. Listen to his full presentation by clicking the audio file.

Professor Porter is a world authority on strategy in business, who has spent the past decade working in healthcare systems in dozens of countries.

He was speaking at the Maximising Quality, Minimising Cost event, organised by UCL Partners and NHS trust regulator Monitor, with GP as media partner.
