UK GPs most likely in Europe to refer patients to websites

UK GPs are the most likely in Europe to recommend patients to visit specific websites, according to research.

A total of 74% of 200 GPs do so in the UK compared with 50% in Italy, 47% in Germany, and 43% in Spain, found research company Kantar Health in partnership with advertising agency Digitas Health.

The researchers also found that 63% of UK GPs use professional online forums, boards or communities and 27% use video portals, for example YouTube, for health-related queries.

UK GPs are also the most likely to see value in online support groups at 91%.

Believed to be the first European research of its type, it highlights the positive and increasing power of social media to strengthen the physician-patient relationship.
