Tory proposals in wake of Mid Staffordshire scandal

The Conservatives are pledging to end the 'tick-box, target culture in the NHS' in response to the high death rates at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

They are proposing a five-point plan which proposes tougher inspection to root out failure, a stronger voice for patients, power for patients to hold failing hospitals accountable, an end to box-ticking and targets and exposing hospitals to public scrutiny.

Shadow Conservative health secretary Andrew Lansley said: ‘We are calling on the government to include these changes in the NHS bill that is currently going through parliament.

‘Labour needs to act quickly to make sure that tragedies like the events in Mid Staffordshire never happen again.’
