Students unaware of meningitis vaccine status

Most UK students do not know if they have been vaccinated against meningitis, a survey has found.

The Meningitis Research Foundation polled over 1,060 students aged 17-24.

The charity found that 53% of students did not know whether they were vaccinated against meningitis. In addition, 25% mistakenly believe a rash is present in all cases of meningitis.

Students are, after babies and young children, the group most at-risk from contracting meningitis.

The meningococcal C conjugate (MenC) vaccine is given to children and is available to anyone under 25 who has not already received the vaccine.

The vaccine protects against infection by meningococcal group C bacteria. But it does not protect against meningitis caused by viruses or by other bacteria, or meningococcal group B which is common in the UK.
