Stanway women called for vital screenings

More than 2,000 women from the Stanway area of Colchester are to be invited for NHS breast screening.

More than 2,000 women from the Stanway area of Colchester are to be invited for NHS breast screening.

Appointments will be offered at the Essex County Hospital, Colchester, from March 30 to the end of July.

A total of 2,500 women, aged between 50 and 70, from the Stanway area, which includes Marks Tey, Copford and Shrub End, will be invited for  breast x-rays.

Anne Pugh, health promotion advisor for the Chelmsford and Colchester Breast Screening Service, said: “Breast screening can help to find small changes in the breast before there are any other signs or symptoms. The idea of holding the sessions at the Essex County Hospital is to enable us to provide breast screening as near to where the women live as possible.

“Invitations for a mammogram will be posted to women about three weeks before their appointment and we urge them to take up the offer.”

Similar screening sessions at the hospital were recently completed for women from the Tiptree area and women from the Lexden and Ardleigh will be invited once the Stanway sessions are completed.

The Chelmsford and Colchester Breast Screening Service currently has two mobile units in operation at Dovercourt and Braintree, meaning women across north east and mid-Essex are being screened.

Women aged over 71 are also eligible for breast screening and are able to make their own appointments by telephoning the breast screening office.

The Chelmsford and Colchester Breast Screening Service can be contacted on 01206 744749. Anne Pugh can be called direct for advice or information on 01206 744645.
