Software tool monitors patients for side-effects

More than half of UK GP practices will receive a software tool to monitor patients taking drugs with severe side-effects.

GP IT system supplier EMIS has called the roll-out of its Medication Monitoring tool, ‘the first proactive implementation from a primary care supplier of a recall and alerting module’.

The software will alert GPs on-screen if patients have missed a test and enable identification of patients who need check-ups with a daily search facility.

Edinburgh GP Dr Geoff Smith said: ‘Our previous system was much more complicated
and involved a search every few weeks at best and the use of patient diaries and recall procedures. This puts it all in one place.’

It was expected that over 5,000 practices would have the tool by this week.
