'Serious concerns' over DoH leadership and strategy

A Cabinet Office review of government departments has raised 'serious concerns' about the DoH.

The National Audit Office ranks the DoH as the worst of 17 government departments for leadership and strategy, 16th for capability but second for delivery.

The leadership ranking is based on the results of four criteria. The DoH scores 0 out of 4 for setting direction (serious concerns about current capability), 1 for igniting passion, pace and drive (significant weaknesses in capability for future delivery that would require urgent action), 2 for taking responsibility for leading delivery and change and 2 for building capability.

The report adds: ‘Two departments, the Home Office and DoH, raised serious concerns about their capability in one or two elements.’

A later review found that there had been ‘some – good’ progress on some areas with challenges remaining on others.

A DoH spokesman said: ‘The NAO report acknowledges the considerable progress the DoH has made.

‘Inevitably, challenges remain in some areas. We look forward to demonstrating that the DoH is continuing to address these challenges when the review team returns this summer.'
