Scan can predict heart disease

An imaging technique has been developed by US researchers that can reveal fat build-up in the hearts of pre-diabetic individuals long before symptoms of heart disease or diabetes appear.

The technique detects fat accumulation by capturing the signal from a beating heart and converting it into a single image. Currently, there is no way clinically to evaluate the fatty heart. It is hoped that the technique could be used to provide a way to screen patients for early signs of heart disease in diabetes (Circulation Online 2007).
