Professor Sparrow has chaired the RCGP professional development board for five years, leading the development of a continuing professional development strategy to support revalidation.
He said: 'I am delighted to have been appointed as the RCGP medical director of revalidation, it is an honour to succeed Mike Pringle in this role. I will continue to work to make revalidation practical for all GPs and aim to ensure consistency of appraisal and revalidation across the profession.
Professor Pringle said he was 'proud of what the college has achieved so far'to prepare GPs for revalidation.
The GMC said last week that revalidation remained on track to begin later this year, subject to approval from health secretary Jeremy Hunt.
