Research Brief: Workstation designed to help obese workers

A vertical workstation could allow employees to exercise and lose weight while they work, according to UK research. The workstation consists of a computer, keyboard and treadmill. In a trial, 15 obese volunteers burned an average of 191 calories an hour using the treadmill, compared to 72 calories just sitting at their desk. The designers believe that the desk could help obese people to lose up to 30kg a year (Br J Sports Med Online 2007).
