Research brief: Breast cancer raises suicide risk
Women who have recovered from breast cancer are more likely to commit suicide, US researchers have found. An analysis of suicide rates in 723,810 breast cancer survivors diagnosed between 1953 and 2001 showed a risk of suicide in the 30 years after diagnosis was 0.2 per cent. This is 37 per cent higher than the suicide rate of the general population. The suicide risk was greatest in women whose cancer reached a higher stage.
