Research brief: Antihistamine does not help babies sleep

The antihistamine diphenyhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) does not help infants have a good night's sleep, according to a US study, which included 44 children aged six to 15 months old who were not sleeping through the night. They were randomly assigned to receive 100ml of the drug or a placebo 30 minutes before bedtime. Over six weeks, parental reports showed no difference in the quality of sleep between the two groups (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 2006; 160: 707-12).
