Research brief: Aggression fuels heavy drinking

Aggression, rather than celebration, is the cause of alcohol consumption among rugby spectators, claim Welsh researchers. A survey of 197 male rugby supporters who watched a match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff showed that those in the winning and drawing groups rated themselves more aggressive than those whose team had lost. The spectators who remained aggressive then went on to consume more alcohol after the match (Criminal behaviour and Mental Health Online 2007).
