Dr Canning was nominated for the award by a patient, who commended her ‘patience, kindness, understanding, empathy and reassurance’ during her diagnosis and treatment for ovarian cancer.

GP of the Year is part of a suite of awards given by RCGP Scotland aimed at championing excellence and improving quality of care.

RCGP Scotland chairman Dr Ken Lawton said: ‘All the GP of the Year nominations we had this year were touching, thought-provoking and demonstrated the value of general practice from the perspective of those it is designed to care for.

‘With over 90,000 consultations held every day in more than 1,000 practices across the country, from inner city areas to the highlands and islands, general practice in Scotland is something to be really proud of.’
