Dr Joe Tangney from the Glen Mor Practice in Fort William, Highland, won the patient-nominated award for GP of the Year.

As part of his nomination, patient Annie Mackintosh said Dr Tangney showed great compassion when caring for her husband.

‘We are extremely grateful that his care enabled my husband to stay in his own home and that he was cared for by a GP that he trusted and respected,’ Ms Mackintosh said.

The Maryhill practice in Elgin received the Practice Team of the Year award.

RCGP Scotland chairman Dr John Gillies said the event was not about ‘patting ourselves on the back’ but about showing what can be achieved and learning from it.

‘This event is about celebrating what we do well and using these examples of outstanding care to learn and develop as a profession.

‘We have some dedicated and outstanding GPs and practice teams here in Scotland and we benefit from what their patients tell us about genuinely outstanding care,’ Dr Gillies said.

The event raised over £1,400 for the RCGP’s charity partners this year, Diabetes UK.
