RCGP left out of dementia plan

The RCGP was not consulted on DoH plans to boost dementia training for GPs, its chairman Professor Steve Field said.

Training GPs to pick up dementia earlier was a key part of the dementia strategy for England, launched last week.

But Professor Field told GP: 'We responded to the consultation, but since then we have not been consulted on proposed changes to training,' he said.

The plans suggest that the DoH was not up to speed with the GP curriculum, revised in 2007 to include more training on dementia care, he said.

A DoH spokesman said that the strategy had been shaped by 'extremely helpful' written submissions from the RGCP, BMA and individual doctors.

Developing workforce aspects of the strategy would involve at least two years of consultation and joint work with GPs, he added.
