Pregnancy risks high in both diabetes types

Women with type-2 diabetes have the same high risk of pregnancy complications as those with type-1 diabetes, according to a UK study.

An analysis of stillbirth rates, perinatal and neonatal mortality and the prevalence of congenital anomalies in the children of 2,359 women with diabetes from England, Wales and Northern Ireland found similar rates of complications in those with type-2 and type-1 diabetes.

At over 3 per cent, the peri-natal mortality rate was more than four times higher than in the general population.

Nearly 5 per cent of women with diabetes gave birth to children with congenital anomalies such as neural tube defects and congenital heart disease.

The researchers suggested that women with diabetes should take a higher than usual dose of folic acid from before conception up to week 12 of pregnancy.
