The likelihood of developing a tumour in the pituitary gland can be determined by your genes, Finnish researchers have claimed. They have identified a genetic mutation which increases the risk of developing a pituitary adenoma. Although benign, these tumours can pose serious health risks by compressing neighbouring tissue or interfering with growth hormone secretion (Science 2006; 312: 1,228-30).
