PCT leaves GPC chair speechless

GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman described himself as 'lost for words', after a north London PCT denied it had unlawfully threatened to remove GPs' contracts.

Twenty-five of Barnet's 128 practices had been told that their contract could be removed, because their premises were illegal under the disability discrimination act (GP, 19 September).

The move has been widely interpreted as an attempt to pressure single-handed practices into polyclinics. The situation was so dire that the local council had called a public meeting to express their support for the borough's GPs.

But the PCT denied it had made any such threats, correctly stating that it had no legal power to remove GMS contracts.

Dr Buckman said he was stunned by this denial. 'I don't think that local councillors act in that way on the basis of a false allegation,' he said. 'And I can't imagine 150 people would have turned up on the basis of a mass hallucination.'

He added that 'most' of the people who attended the meeting were 'non-histrionics'.
