'Partners should treat GPs as well as firms'

Partnerships employing GPs need to ensure their terms and conditions are at least as good or better than those offered by large commercial organisations, say LMCs.

Private providers now offer an alternative career path for GPs not ready or able to commit to a partnership.

‘We need to get across to the profession that there is a pool of salaried GPs ready to be employed by large commercial organisations,' said Dr John Grenville, medical secretary of Derbyshire LMC.

‘Working for a practice offers pension and stability benefits. It's easier to fulfil your vocation.'

‘Increasing tensions' are tearing salaried and freelance GPs and principals apart.

GPs need to design flexible careers that ‘meet everybody's needs', says Derbyshire LMC in a motion to next month's LMCs' conference in central London.

‘Our future and reputation is in our own hands,' said Dr Grenville.
