Pandemic flu plan 'woeful and dangerous'

DoH plans to tackle a potential outbreak of pandemic influenza are weak and could put the public at risk, doctors believe.

Clinicians at the ARM backed a motion calling the plans 'woefully inadequate and dangerous'.

The motion said the NHS's ability to put adequate plans in place was limited because of DoH cuts at the Health Protection Agency. It demanded a 'realistic, intelligent and appropriately resourced plan'.

South Birmingham PCT director of public health Dr Chris Spencer Jones said: 'There is no clear guidance. The DoH needs to focus on organising primary care to deal with a potential outbreak.'

GPC negotiator Dr Peter Holden said the plans were not as bad as the motion claimed. But he urged ministers to make decisions that would allow plans to be improved.
