Online tool helps find depression

An online interactive programme to help GPs in the detection and treatment of depression in older people has been developed by the charity Age Concern.

The programme, called Take the Challenge, is designed to help GPs identify the barriers that can stand in the way of depression being correctly diagnosed and treated, such as negative stereotypes around ageing.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, called for all GPs to take part in the programme.

Carolyn Chew-Graham, clinical champion of mental health at the RCGP, said: 'We are encouraging GPs to Take the Challenge as part of their self-directed continuing professional development programme.'
