Nurses pressured to manipulate data and falsify information

Nurses are being pressured into manipulating data and falsifying information around key targets, according to the RCN.

It has singled out the four-hour emergency care target and encouraged members to call its whistle-blowing hotline where they suspect targets are being manipulated where they work or where they are being put in a position where patient care is secondary to meeting targets.

Dr Peter Carter, RCN chief executive and general secretary, said: ‘We know of certain instances where nurses have been pressurised to manipulate information and who are pushed into meeting targets ahead of patient care. We are worried these cases represent the tip of the iceberg and we want to find out the true extent of pressures to meet targets - we are determined to bring this out into the open.'
