It has singled out the four-hour emergency care target and encouraged members to call its whistle-blowing hotline where they suspect targets are being manipulated where they work or where they are being put in a position where patient care is secondary to meeting targets.

Dr Peter Carter, RCN chief executive and general secretary, said: ‘We know of certain instances where nurses have been pressurised to manipulate information and who are pushed into meeting targets ahead of patient care. The hotline number is 0345 772 6300.
