Nurses need to use IT to show their input

Electronic patient records could provide evidence of the effect nurses have on care, the congress heard.

Professor June Clark, chair of the RCN information in nursing forum, urged nurses to become involved in IT if they were to reap the benefits.

Gerry Bolger, from London, said technology could provide proof of nursing input. ‘We need to ensure that IT gives us the evidence we require to protect jobs and shows the importance of nursing,’ he added.

But John Hill, a charge nurse from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, said the money would be better spent on staff. ‘I’m not impressed at the millions spent on putting idiot boxes at the nurses’ station. I want that money spent on more nurses,’ he said.
