Mr Smith takes up his position on 15 September until a permanent chief executive is in post.
He has worked in the NHS for over 30 years and held a number of senior management posts, including experience in substantive and interim chief executive roles.
He said: ‘I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in partnership with the governing council, senior management team and stakeholders, to assist the NMC in implementing the action plan to meet the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence’s (CHRE) recommendations.’
Previous NMC chief executive Sarah Thewlis resigned after a damning CHRE review.
