NICE supports exercise advice

GPs and community nurses should encourage older people to take part in local walking schemes, new NICE guidance recommends.

In guidelines on interventions to promote older people's mental well-being, NICE says health professionals working with older people should provide health advice and information on the benefits of walking and promote participation in local walking schemes.

The guidelines also suggest sessions to encourage patients to identify, construct, rehearse and carry out daily routines and activities that help to maintain or improve their health and well-being.

In separate guidance, NICE has recommended spinal cord manipulation for patients who have neuropathic pain that continues for at least six months despite appropriate medical management and who have undergone a successful trial of the treatment.
