NHS workforce policy 'broken'

The DoH's NHS workforce policy is 'broken', shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley told nurses at the final day of the RCN Congress 2008 yesterday.

He said that the policy was constantly being reinvented and called for stability.

‘We need a new system where healthcare employers and the staff side come up with consistent views over the long-term, say 10 years, of what workforce requirements will be,' Mr Lansley said.

He also called for the establishment of a new body, which he said could be called ‘Nurse Education England', to oversee training and education for nurses.

RCN chief executive and general secretary Dr Peter Carter revealed earlier at the event that he had written to DoH director general of workforce Clare Chapman to raise concerns about workforce planning.
