NHS workforce head backs switch from staff growth to improved quality

The NHS has reached its staffing capacity and must now focus on improving quality, according to the NHS workforce director general.

Giving her first interview to GP's sister magazine HR since appointment a year ago, Clare Chapman said: ‘The years of simply hiring more doctors and nurses has now ended. I do believe we have the capacity in the system to provide a first-class NHS service.

‘We've got to move away from the overall growth story. Today the story should be about improving service.'
