NHS reforms must tackle depression

Better management of depression in people with long-term conditions should become a higher priority as plans to reform the NHS take shape, a leading charity has said.

One in three UK adults lives with a long-term condition, according to the Depression Alliance. People with long-term conditions are twice as likely to suffer from depression, it warned. The charity said that depression worsens outcomes, and significantly increases the costs of tackling the underlying long-term conditions.

The call for action has been launched as part of Depression Awareness Week, which runs to 17 April.

Depression Awareness chief executive Emer O'Neill said: 'Good diagnosis, treatment and management of depression in people with long-term conditions can have a huge impact on positive health outcomes and reducing the cost of treating long-term conditions.'
