NHS Direct launches text message information service

Patients will soon be able to receive details of their nearest health services via text message, under an initiative being piloted by NHS Direct.

To receive information, patients need to text details of the service they need - GP, dentist, hospital, pharmacy, A&E or optician - followed by their postcode, to 61121. A reply from NHS direct will give details of the options closest to the postcode given.

NHS Direct commercial director Ronnette Lucraft said: ‘To start with we're launching the service as a pilot through our freeview digital TV service, on channel 108.'

She said the service had been developed because 84 per cent of UK adults use mobile phones, creating a ‘huge potential audience'.
