To receive information, patients need to text details of the service they need - GP, dentist, hospital, pharmacy, A&E or optician - followed by their postcode, to 61121. A reply from NHS direct will give details of the options closest to the postcode given.
NHS Direct commercial director Ronnette Lucraft said: ‘To start with we're launching the service as a pilot through our freeview digital TV service, on channel 108.'
She said the service had been developed because 84 per cent of UK adults use mobile phones, creating a ‘huge potential audience'.
