NHS Confederation warns on electronic care records

Electronic care records may cause significant strain on NHS trusts' budgets and staff if a programme is rolled out before the issues it presents are tackled, according to the NHS Confederation.

Nigel Edwards, NHS Confederation director of policy, said: ‘Some parts of the National Programme for IT system are working well but the crucial element, electronic care records, is not working to its full potential.

‘Patients increasingly have many different conditions and joining up their records across different NHS organisations is important. That is why we asked the DoH to look again at this project so we can see how local NHS organisations can develop a system that is more responsive to their local needs and move it forward.

‘The delay in implementing an effective system is serious and there needs to be real reassurances not only that lessons have been learned but that the programme isn’t rolled out before people know it does what they want it to do.’
