NHS Choices could publish details of practice profits

Details of practice profits could be posted online for patients to see, NHS website developers have hinted.

NHS Choices is a website which provides details of all NHS services.

Each practice has its own page listing opening hours and service details. GPs can edit the page to provide extra information.

But during a demonstration of the site at this week's NAPC conference, a PCT manager asked whether the site could be extended to include details of practice profits.

He noted that limited companies are required to file financial statements at Companies House, adding: 'I think patients want to know if they are going to a practice that has £4 million of revenue.'

Robert Clearly, head of data at NHS Choices, said focus groups had not asked for details of practice profitability. 'But if the data is there,' he added, 'I begin from a position of "why not".'
