News in brief: Breastfeeding does not affect intelligence
Breastfeeding has virtually no effect on a child’s intelligence, according to a study in the BMJ. This study on the relationship between breast and brain was the first to factor in maternal intelligence. The study authors from the Medical Research Council’s Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow said they were not surprised ‘given the known association of maternal intelligence with the initiation and duration of breastfeeding’ (BMJ online).
