New primary care minister is appointed

North Warwickshire MP Mike O'Brien replaces Ben Bradshaw as health minister responsible for primary care.

The 54-year-old has been an MP since 1992 and has worked previously at the Home and Foreign Offices before becoming minister for trade, minister of state for e-commerce, energy and competitiveness and solicitor general.

Most recently he was pension reform minister and energy minister.

His other responsibilities include NHS financial and performance management, Connecting for Health and Choice.

50-year-old Lincoln MP Gillian Merron becomes public health minister following Dawn Primarolo's appointment as children's minister.

Merron was elected in 1997 and was recently a minister at the Cabinet Office and the first ever minister of the East Midlands. Her last post was parliamentary under-secretary at the Foreign Office.
