New Ostomy bag is so comfortable and easy

Like many other people who have taken on bowel cancer and fought it, Charles Gaffney was faced with the prospect of wearing a colostomy bag for the rest of his life.

Like many other people who have taken on bowel cancer and fought it, Charles Gaffney was faced with the prospect of wearing a colostomy bag for the rest of his life.

Charles started to question the design and usability of the current standard bag while still in hospital.  Frequent bag changes, during the early stages of his recovery soon caused the area around the stoma to become not just sore, but downright raw and painful. This, combined with becoming proficient in the job of cleaning the area, applying adhesive and fitting the bag, while holding a mirror to see what he was doing, became a lengthy and painful chore, and did nothing to add to the morale lowering effects of having to live with such a device.

But Charles did not sit back and bemoan his fate.  He vowed to make life better and easier, not just for himself, but for all his fellow bag wearers.

Charles hit on the root of the problem, in that all of the increasing weight of the bag was concentrated on the area right around the stoma itself, causing pulling and irritation of the skin area, which of course never has a chance to recover.

His innovative design was essentially to raise the point on the abdomen where the bag was attached, and hence remove the major pressure from the stoma point itself. This combined with a change of bag material and improved appearance of the bag, makes the new bag much more user friendly.  It is easy to fit, hangs better as it fills, and is nowhere near as bulky as a conventional bag.

Charles himself uses the new bag regularly and reports a huge improvement in comfort, appearance and crucially all the soreness and discomfort around his stoma has disappeared.

‘My quality of life has taken a quantum leap’ commented Charles, ‘ I feel more confident, and an end to the pain around my stoma has made life much easier.

Charles’ invention is highly regarded and he has been awarded a SMART award by Invest NI to develop and bring his product to market.

Charles is receiving assistance from London-based Inventorlink Products Ltd, the successful and long-established international company who seek licences to take products to the market. ‘We are delighted to be associated with a quality product, which we believe can make a real contribution to making lives easier for ostomy bag wearers’ said Mike Abbott, Business Manager for Inventorlink.
