Out of 122 of the 152 PCTs in England surveyed, results suggest that only 5 per cent of GP practices carry out STI tests. Around 34 per cent of PCTs said they were planning for GPs to take on some of their areas of STI work to ease GUM clinic workload.
The All-Party Parliamentary Pro-choice and Sexual Health Group said PCTs needed to pay GPs to carry out these services.
PCTs should carry out regular contraceptive audits as 47 per cent of PCTs surveyed were unaware what types of contraceptives were being prescribed by GPs in their area.
