McKesson's STAR PAS & IT infrastructure to help underpin hospital group's ongoing business growth

14 December 2006:  Classic Hospitals,  the UK’s fifth largest independent hospital group and provider of healthcare services to both private and NHS patients, has selected healthcare services and technology provider McKesson to provide an outsourced managed service for the facilities management of its STAR Patient Administration System (PAS) and associated IT and communications infrastructure.

In a £multi-million contract, the managed service from McKesson will provide the Group with a solid and stable PAS and IT infrastructure, enabling it to focus on growing its new business and providing high quality healthcare services.  Classic Hospitals chose McKesson above the LSP-offered solution, because of the Fortune 16 company’s international track-record, its reliability as a dedicated provider to the UK healthcare market and its stable and proven technology.

A newly established and ambitious private hospital group, Classic Hospitals has recently successfully completed the standardisation of its 10 hospitals on the STAR Patient Administration System (PAS) from McKesson. Classic Hospitals wanted a standardised single Patient Administration System (PAS), to facilitate the transfer of the hospitals from their previous owner BUPA, and the associated migration of patient and hospital data, as well as to maintain compliance with current Government regulations. The single standardised PAS would reduce the organisation’s overall support and maintenance costs and remove wasteful duplication of time and effort by staff previously required to use two different systems.

Anne Keenan, IT Director at Classic Hospitals explained today, “Classic Hospitals selected McKesson because STAR is, quite simply, the most sophisticated, stable and proven PAS system available on the UK market today. The system allows further integration with Choose & Book and more broadly, the NHS National Programme for IT initiative, which is introducing modernised computer systems into the NHS to improve patient care and services.”

McKesson’s STAR PAS is officially an ’existing system‘ within the NHS Connecting for Health initiative. However, on the request of the local trusts and the NHS Connecting for Health directors, the system had previously been made compliant with the new NPfIT standards, and now interacts with the Choose & Book electronic booking system and the NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS) run by BT.

In addition, a fully outsourced service will be provided by McKesson for Classic’s IT services with the infrastructure hosted offsite at McKesson’s datacentre.   These services include the hosting and provision of the PAS, implementing and supporting a Wide Area Network (WAN), management of the Local Area Network (LAN), hosting of the hospitals’ pathology system, Clinisys, which will be fully integrated via the Interface Manager integration engine also delivering the Choose & Book functionality.

With McKesson hosting and providing Classic Hospitals’ IT Services, the organisation is able to focus on its core business which is delivering health services to its patients. This gives Classic Hospitals great confidence that the processes and data it is handling is being taken care of and will support day-to-day business activities. Classic Hospitals will reap the benefits of reduced support and maintenance costs as well as saving on administration time.

Commenting on the relationship with McKesson, Anne Keenan concludes, “We have been very impressed with McKesson and the work they have done so far in managing the migration onto STAR and are delighted with the decision for McKesson to host all our IT services across the Group. Fundamentally, McKesson’s expertise and pure healthcare IT focus, provides us the peace of mind that our PAS and IT infrastructure will support, rather than hinder our business objectives.”
