LMCs conference: Choose and Book condemned

GPs rose up in anger at the LMCs conference to condemn the routing of patient referrals through Choose and Book, thwarting direct GP-to-consultant named referrals.

While stopping short of demanding the national suspension of Choose and Book, delegates strongly backed a call  that Choose and  Book should not be compulsory and called on the government to institute a national review of the controversial system.

Dr Paddy Twomey from Lincolnshire LMC pointed out that a package holiday may suit some but in many cases an individually tailored holiday is required.

He condemned the lack of detail, the downtime, the competing targets - choice versus Choose and Book - the poor project management and the poor training which allowed him a certificate after a 60-90 second training.

Dr Mike Ingram, Hertfordshire LMC, pointed out that ‘with the right investment and development' Choose and Book can be a useful service.
