The suggestion by Sir Sandy Macara will be debated at the BMA’s annual representatives meeting in Liverpool later this month.
Mr Lamb said: ‘Making the MMR vaccination mandatory is a step too far but Sir Sandy Macara is right to raise concern about this important issue.
‘The huge numbers of children who have not been vaccinated raises serious concern of a measles epidemic in the near future.
‘It is extremely worrying the way that some people have stoked fears about the vaccine while ignoring the weight of medical opinion which believes the MMR vaccine to be safe.
‘Ministers must do more to inform people about the realities of this vaccine or we will end up suffering from the terrible consequences of a re-emergence of measles.’
