Letters, calls and emails: Wasting NHS money for political ends is wrong

Dear Editor

While we may feel insulted by the way our profession has been treated recently by the DOH, it would be disgraceful to resort to the measures suggested by Dr Nigel Higson (GP, 16 March).

He suggested that we deliberately prescribe more expensive drugs to hurt the DoH, while appearing to forget that this actually is taxpayers’ money.

More alarmingly, he suggests that prescribing co-amoxiclav instead of penicillin V would improve the quality of patient care.

The BNF carries a very clear warning about the increased risk of cholestatic jaundice with co-amoxiclav. It is not an alternative to penicillin V and should only be prescribed where indicated.
