Letters Calls And Emails: There is a plus side to antibiotic prescribing

Dear Editor

Dr Kausar Jafri is absolutely correct when he supports the view of the late Professor Bill Inman who claimed with irony that ‘Rheumatic fever has been eradicated by the irresponsible prescribing of antibiotics by GPs' (GP, 19 January). I frequently see patients with severe streptococcal infections and quinsy who have been refused antibiotics.

The pressure on GPs not to prescribe may be based on reducing antibiotic resistance and MRSA, but antibiotics have been available over the counter in Spain for many years, and their hospital MRSA rate is half that of the UK.
