Letters, calls and emails: Media is wrong about GPs, food and pens

Dear Editor

Lately there has been a lot in the media about gifts and free lunches given to GPs by pharmaceutical salespeople.

The drug budget in UK for the NHS is around £ 10 billion. There are many players after this pot of money. The pharmaceutical companies play the biggest part.

But doctors are professionals, and will not be persuaded to prescribe a drug because of a gift or a lunch. In an educational meeting they want to learn how a drug works, whether it would benefit some patients with a particular problem and whether it would be a cost-effective choice.
