Letters calls & emails: GPs need to fight rise of healthcare ‘market'

Dear Editor

Anything that is done can be undone. So, while Dr Stewart Drage is right to advise his constituents to adopt a pragmatic approach to the practice-based commissioning (PBC) market for now, to suggest that ‘the market is open and here to stay’ is too defeatist (GP, 13 April).

Trading — for profit — people’s illnesses and injuries, their minds and bodies, their birthing, living, suffering and dying, like so many pork bellies, is not civilised and has no place in any society that I would wish to tolerate.

The future needs to be secured, but it needs to deserve the title ‘civilisation’.
