Letters, calls and emails: Eastern European GPs provide cheap on-call

Dear Editor

My colleague Dr Chris Houghton suggests in his letter that, should he cease to do his out-of-hours session some manpower shortage will befall us (GP, 23 February).

Far from it, sir. Doctors now fly in from central Europe to prop up our out-of-hours.

Agencies say they try to find native doctors to do these shifts but that they cannot.
I wonder if that has anything to do with the very modest remuneration they offer.

So we have out-of-hours on the cheap and native GPs can slumber away — as they say — ‘everyone’s a winner’.
