Letters calls & emails: Demerit awards will not boost GP performance

Professor Alan Maynard’s suggestion of demerit awards is absolutely crazy.

His theories have no basis in reality. It worries me that someone holding such a view, so clearly of touch with real people (with real feelings and doing real jobs), is in a position to shape national health policy.

If anything is going to de-motivate and sap the morale of doctors it’s pay cuts for not achieving targets.

I wonder if he has ever employed staff; if so, I doubt they stayed around for long.
