Letter: The perfect PC answer to a perfect PCT enquiry

Dear Editor

The political drive to implement Choose and Book continues apace and it would appear that PCTs are under pressure to ensure as many practices as possible have signed up.

We have had a communication from our local PCT enquiring if we are in a position to offer choice to our patients, even though we do not have a range of hospitals from which to choose.

My practice manager responded with a reply that would put politicians to shame.

His response was: 'Technically we are unable to offer choice. If a patient chooses to request a choice, then we have chosen to theoretically, if not actually, offer choice via a patient choice co-ordinator. When choice is available we will be offering our patients a way to access choice.'

I wonder if he is considering a career move to local government?

Dr Ken Mathews, Hellesdon Medical Practice.
