Letter: Extended hours will only be of use to insomniacs

I read Dr Jonathon Pywell's letter regarding extended opening hours in total agreement (GP, 8 February).

The most astonishing thing is that to open for the few commuters in our population we should be available before and after they have commuted. Our opening hours would be 5.30am-6.30am and 8pm-9.30pm.

I strongly suspect that at those times commuters are either bleary eyed and wondering why they have to be up so early to get to an office job in the city or looking forward to a glass of wine and seeing a brief glimpse of their children before they are put to bed.

We will just see the insomniac elderly population in the morning and have empty waiting rooms in the evenings without our glass of wine or our children.

I will be abstaining from the vote to highlight the lack of negotiations that have taken place.

Dr Jack Hickey, Maidstone, Kent.
